CEREC Same Day Crowns Q&A

What are CEREC® same-day crowns?

A CEREC same-day crown is a synthetic cap bonded on top of a damaged or decayed permanent tooth. Traditionally, getting a dental crown took at least two visits. Dr. Ray has a CEREC milling machine on site, allowing him to design, manufacture, and apply crowns during a single appointment.

Who can benefit from CEREC same-day crowns?

Dr. Ray and the team use CEREC same-day crowns for many reasons, including to:

  • Protect weak teeth
  • Restore broken or worn down teeth
  • Support teeth with large fillings
  • Attach to dental implants
  • Mask stains and discoloration

Dr. Ray might also recommend a CEREC same-day crown if you need a root canal. A root canal is an endodontic procedure designed to preserve a permanent tooth and prevent the need for an extraction.

What does getting CEREC same-day crowns involve?

Before recommending a CEREC same-day crown, Dr. Ray reviews your dental records, performs an oral exam, and takes a series of oral X-rays. If he identifies visible damage or decay, Dr. Ray numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and carefully removes the affected part of your tooth enamel.

Next, Dr. Ray takes digital impressions of your tooth and uploads them to a computer-aided design (CAD) program. He uses the program to create a custom crown that fits your tooth perfectly. After approving the design, Dr. Ray uploads it to the CEREC milling machine. The CEREC machine then manufactures a custom dental crown from a block of porcelain.

Once the machine finishes, Dr. Ray bonds the new crown on top of your tooth, restoring your smile and your ability to bite and chew. After the bonding material dries, you can return to your routine immediately because there is no downtime or recovery period.

How long do CEREC same-day crowns last?

CEREC same-day crowns last 12-15 years* on average, but you can extend their use by practicing good oral hygiene. The team recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing regularly
  • Visiting Dr. Ray twice a year for professional teeth cleaning
  • Avoiding bad habits like nail-biting
  • Wearing a mouthguard when playing sports
